Critical Review

Shakespeare is a very well known writer of famous plays written back in the 1500s but are still popular today. He sends out messages with the themes that he uses. He is a great writer and his work is still being studied very carefully today. He leaves me thinking, what did he just say after reading a line that he has written.

One theme he is trying to spread across is the theme of true love. He writes romantic lines in this play like the famous line said by Juliet, “Oh Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?” Juliet is expressing her love and concern for Romeo. She also tells Romeo to forget where they come from (their families) in another famous quote, “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” She also says, “Deny thy father and refuse thy name; or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, and I’ll no longer be a Capulet.” She and Romeo then plan to get married secretly and Juliet says this, “Thy purpose marriage, send me word tomorrow, by one, that I’ll procure to come to thee, where and what time thou wilt perform the rite.” This is a very important love scene in Romeo and Juliet and Shakespeare uses the theme of love very well in this play.

There are many themes in Romeo and Juliet. The theme of love is the most important though. If Shakespeare did not include the theme of love in this play, there wouldn’t be a play.
